Lavender Curls

I need to start this post with a question to all the writers out there: How many stories can you write at the same time? Or how many different kinds of writing can one possibly do at one phase in life? I am curious. And I am not looking for an “easy” answer here. If one can do a lot, and I’m not doing it, I am willing to up my game. So, there.

Now onto the post.

It’s not about anything. In fact, it could be about a lot of things. So much has been happening lately. Like how about thinking of an upgrade for CST railway station? Really. We’re the financial capital of this city and we deserve a swanky station. So, how many people up for demanding one?

And then there is collaborative writing. Yes, NaNoWriMo is 2 days away and the writing community is gearing up to lose their minds. But then there is also talk of collaborative writing for an anthology of short stories. Who’s in? What will be the theme? What are we going to write about? And how often will we meet? Answers? Participation?

Also, there is some sort of escapism in the stacked up calendar of daily life. The excuse I give myself every time I look at my blog and think of the multitude of things going through my mind which I don’t express. I tell myself, “I’m busy right now. A lot is going on.” And sure it is. There are meetings, work, dinners, lunches, conversations I’ve never had before; and then there is a time when I think of the blog and tell myself it deserves better than rambling. I excuse myself from a little flexing of my fingers. And then this lovely, brutally honest post hits my inbox and I have to snap out of my excuse-mill.

I had hot, roadside vada pav and cutting chai for lunch today. At 3 pm. There was a satisfaction that rushed in and took its spot in my heart. Lunch has not felt so good in all these days. Yes, I eat well; sometimes in some very expensive places. But lately, it has been feeling like a chore. One that I do because I can’t deal with acidity issues. (Tip: Drink hot water to combat acidity. Works like a charm.) So, yes, the lunch. It was heaven. And that’s why Mumbai, you’re a darling.

I saw a cradle outside a children’s home today. It has been put up there to take in abandoned children. The reactions to this particular cradle have been diverse. Some said it is criminal to leave kids like that. Some said it was really sweet to take them in. I couldn’t help but notice the contrasting views. Like two sides of the same coin. Some people saw what was abandoned. Some saw what could be taken in. While I mulled over this, a beautiful (and wonderfully funny) friend remarked about the cradle, very aptly, “It’s wonderful that is it there, but the need for it is sad.” I thought that was hitting the nail right on the head.

Among the thousands of things that have been happening (which I should write about) I’ve posted a picture that I took today. Hope it brings a smile. It did for me.

Until the next time, when I am as honest.

  1. Still rambling Sameen 😛 … No seriously, good stuff. Loved the candle part. Also, I would be up for participating in that anthology of short-stories thing. Let my lazy ass know all the details, lest I just laze around some more and miss out.

And about CST renovation – how on earth are you gonna make a UNESCO Heritage Site swanky? Conservationists would be might pissed off with that. I get what you are saying and I sympathize and kind of support it too, but how can we pull it off – a good balance of comfort, modernity, ensconced in what is essentially Victorian Gothic architecture with ancient materials and construction.

Also finally how many different things can a writer write – For me, probably not more than 3 stories at one go – those will be short-stories btw, not novellas or novels. And probably 3-4 different varieties of writing – mine is mainly philosophical/contemplative, social critiques, short-stories, book/movie reviews.

    1. Haha. Yes Rajiv. It is rambling. Or more like typing in a few words before the door of the day shuts. It’s cradle, not candle. 😛 I will let you know if it happens. Will get you in touch with concerned authorities.

I am not going to do anything. I was just putting forth an idea.

So, two people have said 2-3 stories at a time. Not sounding good. Not at all. *Shakes head*

  2. To answer you question, I can write as many stories as I can think of. They can all be about different and I will still write them. I just have to have the right inspiration at the time that I am writing it. In fact, the way I narrate also changes from story to story.

I have noticed that you have been quite morose for the past few months. I hope you are okay.

    1. Okay. That’s quite a bit. I have to up my game. But the you’re counting inspiration. I am not.

Umm? What is morose about this post that suggests so?

      1. I only write when I have the urge to do so. However, I can put my urge on simmer and then resume the story later. This, I manage by writing a short synopsis of the story that struck me and then expanding on that later.

Since I approach the story with a fresh mind later, I can also examine it critically and come up with better ideas.

Having said that, I still feel that writing the story ‘in the moment’ is the best way to go about it. When the story is fresh and so is the inspiration, you can actually feel the words flowing out of your mind.

As for that morose bit, I was just commenting on your general disappointment with the world that you talk about in this post.

      2. That’s one way to go about it. So, what are you doing for NaNoWriMo then?

I am not sure which bit. But then again, there is so much to be disappointed in this world. 😛

      3. I am writing, that’s what I’m doing 🙂

I will write the outline today and then work on that. I am writing with a friend. He is the one who came up with the idea for the novel, I am just putting it to words. My novel is set in the 1980s and the story follows a village in pre-independence India. Historical fiction 😀
